Too confining in a rapidly changing world. But we do have values, and the first that I'll propose is that we are explorers. We experiment. We flip over rocks to see what's underneath. We speculate on what convergence and accelerating change will bring. We push the envelope. We are early adopters, pathfinders, trail-blazers, discoverers, and adventurers.

If you were a member of Emergent Learning Forum before, you're now a member of both eLearning Forum and Emergent Learning Forum. Living things, be they people, animals, or organizations, replace worn-out cells through cell division. One cell splits to form two, each carrying the DNA that makes it special.
Emergent Learning Forum has matured to the point where we're splitting in two.

eLearning Forum will continue along the path of inquiry initiated six years ago at SRI. Eilif Trondsen will lead the eLearning Forum. Eilif plans to conduct monthly meetings on best practices and implementation, primarily in Silicon Valley.

Emergent Learning Forum will branch into online inquiries of edgier topics. I expect to host topical events as issues arise, leveraging the power of the internet to serve a worldwide audience.

The two Forums will work closely with one another. After all, we share the same heritage. Eilif and I fully expect the two new entities to surpass their common parent in stature, membership, and impact.

FAQ

Purpose
We are a non-commercial community of decision-makers at the intersection of learning, technology, business, and design who

Promote understanding and use of learning in industry and government worldwide

Provide a forum for resolving issues impeding the progress of learning initiatives

Identify and publicize new developments and emerging best practices

Background
Founded in 1998 as the Silicon Valley eLearning Network, three years later we morphed into the eLearningForum . In January 2004, we became Emergent Learning Forum, dedicated to pushing the envelope at the convergence of technology, learning, and business.. In March 2005, the group divided into two entities, the eLearning Forum and this, the Emergent Learning Forum.

Emergence
Emergence is what results when complex systems interact. It's up to us to mold Emergent Learning into a useful concept. My notion of Emergent Learning includes:

New combinations

Multidisciplinary

Self-organizing

Dynamic, evolving

Often surprising

Examples? Think of what you get when you combine learning with other fields or technologies.

learning + contextual collaboration

learning + search + knowledge harvesting

learning + workflow + business process modeling

simulation + multiplayer environments

Status
We are forming an Advisory Board to provide direction.
